The Koshi Tappu (176 sq. km) was established in 1976 to protect the rare wild water buffaloes, Arna (Bubalus arnee). It is a protected area in the Terai (low land) of eastern Nepal. In 1987, the Koshi Tappu was declared a Ramsar site, a wetland of international importance.

Koshi Tappu is only the home of Arnas in Nepal. That's why, for visitors interested in seeing Arna in Nepal, Koshi Tappu is only the option. There are 327 Arnas as of last of 2014 in Koshi Tappu Reserve.

A wide range of faunal species inhabit in the reserve which has important habitat for a variety of wildlife. Animal species, including Hog dear, Wild boar, spotted deer, Blue bull and Rock python reside in this reserve. The Koshi River is a home of 80 species of fish, including the endangered Gharial crocodile and Gangetic dolphins.

The very famous bird watching reserve is the smallest wildlife reserve in Nepal. Around 441 species of birds, most of them domestic, have been recorded in this reserve. Other birds found in here includes 20 duck species, 2 ibis species, white tailed stonechat, striated marsh warbler, shore birds, water birds, and the endangered swamp partridge and Bengal florican. The Koshi Barrage is an important resting place of migratory birds, including 87 winter and trans-Himalayan migratory species.

Visitors enjoy the beautiful view of several Himalayan peaks, including Mt. Makalu (8,463 m), the world’s fifth highest peak from Koshai Tappu.

The best time to see and enjoy the migratory and local birds is dusk and dawn in October to March when the visitors can view also the beautiful mountains.

There are different means of transportation to reach to Koshi Tappu. A 45 minutes flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar and one and half hours drive from Biratnagar to the Camp is the most easiest way. The bus drive is rather long tht take 10 hours from Kathmandu to the reserve. Some visitors prefer the 10-days rafting from Sun Koshi River to the camp.

A small number of lodges and teashops are near the Reserve Headquarters. Based on visitors’ interest and choice everyday drive from Biratnagar, where there are luxurious hotels, to the camp is possible.
