Swoyambhunath is one of the most famous and beautiful Buddhist Stupas or Maha Chaityas that lies on the top of the hill surrounded by the small forest. It is 2 km far from the centre of Kathmandu. It is more than 2000 years old Stupa from where the views of Kathmandu valley is wonderful. Swoyambhunath was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Monuments List in 1979.

Some people say it monkey temple because the huge numbers of monkeys reside here. According to 'Swoyambhu Puran' Swoyambhunath means 'self-existed' god. As explained by the Buddhist text, the civilization of Kathmandu started from the existence of Swoyambhunath. Swoyambhu nath is the best view point to view the kathmandu city.
