Overland trek to Everest base camp

The Overland Trek to Everest Base Camp is a daily departure trekking package to Everest base camp. It is a very cheap and unbeatable new trekking package to explore Everest base camp with a Jeep drive to Thamdanda. Thamdanda is very close to Lukla. Before, there was no road access near Lukla. Either we have to fly from Kathmandu to Lukla or start our trek from Jiri or Phaplu. To start the trek from JIri, tourists need longer holidays because it takes a minimum of 28 days. Otherwise, they have to fly from Kathmandu to Lukla. In peak season, every day there are more than 400 tourists who want to fly to Lukla, and it is difficult to get a flight ticket. In the winter and monsoon seasons, most of the time the weather is very bad and tourists cannot fly in on time. They have to wait many days to get good weather. The flight tickets are more expensive too. Now we do not have to worry about the weather. We can drive near Lukla, which is called Kamdanda, and start our trek. In higher elevations, there is a very rare monsoon, and we can trek easily throughout the year.

Is there road access to Everest base camp?

There is no road access to Everest base camp and the government does not have any plans to build road access. The Everest region is one of the most beautiful trekking routes in the world where trekkers enjoy trekking among natural beauty, including hundreds of snowcapped mountains. Road access disturbs or spoils all the attractions of natural beauty. The Nepal government and people working in tourism get a lot of foreign currency from the trekking business. So, they do not want road access to Everest base camp.
But there is now road access from Kathmandu to Thamdanda and it is very close to Lukla, the starting point of the Everest base camp trek. The overland distance from Kathmandu to Thamdanda is 366 kilometers, and it takes about 12 hours’ drive here, where we stay overnight. The trek begins the following day, after breakfast. It takes about 7 hours to arrive at Phakding. Phakding is the first camp if tourists start their trek from Lukla, and from Lukla it takes about 5 hours to Phakding.

How long does a jeep ride from Kathmandu to Thamdanda or Lukla take?

There is regular jeep drive service from Kathmandu to Kamdanda, which is very close to Lukla. They leave Kathmandu at 05.00 a.m. and arrive at Kamdanda at 06.00 p.m. It takes about 13 hours to drive. The whole road is a mountain road, and you will see breath-takingly beautiful typical Nepali villages, snow rivers, water falls, green hills, and so many snow-capped mountains. The road is more than just a mode of transportation; it is an unforgettable adventure of travel and sightseeing in your life.

What is the cost of a jeep drive from Kathmandu to Thamdanda?

The cost of a Jeep is US$40.00 per person and can travel with 10 to 14 people in one Jeep. But we recommend tourists make one group of eight people and reserve a jeep. The reserve cost will be US$450.00. Then you can stop as you like on the road to take photos of beautiful places.

How long do we have to walk each day on the Everest base camp trek?

We walk about 5 to 7 hours each day.

How is the food in Everest base camp while trekking?

We get all kinds of food that we find in the city area. You do not have to worry about food.

Can we drink local water?

Local people can drink local and normal water. But we do not recommend tourists drinking normal water. Tourists can drink mineral water or purified boiled water.

Day 3: Depart from Kathmandu at 5:00 p.m. and arrive to Thamdanda at 6:00 pm staying overnight at the lodge.(EP plan)

Day 4: About 7 hours' trek to Phakding and stay overnight at the lodge.(AP plan)

Day 5: About 5 hours' trek to Namche bazar and stay overnight at the lodge. (AP plan)

Day 06: Rest for acclimatization. During the daytime, just wonder around Khumbung village. (AP plan)

Day 7: About 7 hours' trek to Pangboche and stay overnight at the lodge. (AP plan)

Day 8: About 7 hours' trek to Lobuche and stay overnight at the lodge. (AP plan)

Day 9: Trek for about 5 hours to Everest Base Camp and spend the night in Gorakshep at a lodge.(AP plan)

Day 10: In the early morning, trek to Kalapatthar to view the sunrise and trek down to Gorekshep to have breakfast. Then trek back to Dingboche at the lodge.(AP plan)

Day 11: Trek back to Khumjung Village. Stay at the lodge and visit Kunde hospital, Khumjung hospital, and Hillari school. (AP plan)

Day 12: Trek back to Phakding and stay overnight at a lodge. (AP plan)

Day 13: Trek back to Thamdanda and stay overnight at a lodge. (AP plan)

Trekking Essentials

Backpack (50 liters) with outside pockets to keep smaller items
Trekking boots, well broken in and waterproofed. Gaiters to keep snow out of boots

Important Information Before Your Trip to Nepal

Payment: Down payment: 15% of total payment is required to confirm the reservation.

Payment of the Balance: Rest amount can be paid in our office after your arrival.

Arrival Point: You will be met at the Kathmandu international airport. Our office representative will be waiting for you holding play card of the Nepal Mountain Lovers Treks and Expedition. In case of your change plan, please let us inform.

Booking Air Ticket: If you don't have regular travel agent, please visit makemytrip.com, www.kayak.com, www.vayama.com. They offer you very good price.

Room System: Normally we have two people in a room. Twin bed or single bed depends on the choice of guests and budget. If tourists want single room, s/he should pay single supplementary.

Trekking Leading Person: Our trekking guide will lead the whole trip with his/her helpers and porters.

Currencies: USD, AUD, EURO are major acceptable currencies in Nepal and visa and credit cards also accepted. There is ATM facility in city area.

Altitude Sickness: Altitude sickness will start from 3000 meter height. Trekkers should immediately inform trekking guide if faced any problems.

Drinking Water: We can get mineral water and boiled water in city area and in some trekking places. We use water purification tablet or liquid in some remote trekking sites.

Laundry Facility: Laundry facility are available in city area but not during the trekking.

Visa: You can get arrival visa at Kathmandu airport that cost 25 USD for 15 days and 40 USD for 30 days. Please bring 2 passport size photos. You can get your visa from the closest Nepali embassy.

Orientation Program: Before starting trekking, trekkers are provided with an orientation by our office representative or trekking guide about the necessary trekking information.

Group Size: There will be maximum 12 persons in one group.

Accommodation: You will stay in a nice tourist standard hotel/resort in city areas. Normal hotels or tents are available during the trekking.

Foods: We provide breakfast, lunch, dinner. Tourists can get continental food both in city and trekking places. Food during the trekking might not meet the standard of your country.

View of Mount Everest: Trekkers to Everest region will of course see the Mount Everest. For trekkers visiting other regions where they cannot view Mount Everest, there are daily mountain flights which approach close to Mount Everest.

Travel Insurance: It is compulsory to have travel insurance.

Personal Expenses: It depends on your spending interest and shopping. There are some expensive handmade carpets, Thanka paintings, jewelries and handicrafts to purchase in Nepal.

Luggage: We take only about 10kg per person in trekking. Your excess baggage will be stored in a hotel.

Tips: Tips are highly accepted and appreciated.

Rules and Regulation

Nepal Mountain Lovers Treks and Expedition accepts your reservation under the following rules and regulations.

1. If the balance payment is not paid before your departure for trekking, the booking will be cancelled without any refund.

2. If there is war or the situation of the country is out of control and the country faces emergency situation before your arrival to Nepal, we inform you not to come Nepal and refund your payment. But in case of any emergency situation or war after your arrival or during the trekking, we will not refund your money. But we will try our best to make your trip successful and pleasant. In such situation, we may need to change the trip plan and itinerary.

3. In case of increase in government royalty and other costs such as the national park fee, you have to pay extra money.

4. If you commit any illegal act or disturbance for the safety and welfare of the group, our leader or guide can ask to leave the group without any right to refund.

5. If you have any complain with regards to trekking and tour please inform our tour leader or company. All kinds of valid complain are welcomed and processed with necessary actions.

6.You are responsible to ensure that all travel documents are with you during the entire trip.
